CCPL, Boorea and GVC together for the people of Haiti It was during the night of 12 January 2010 that a major earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck Haiti. The epicentre was about 15 km from the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the consequences were devastating.

The situation was worsened by the fact that the quake hit one of the poorest countries in the world, where 54% of the population exists on less than 1 dollar a day, where the life expectation is no more than 57 years and where one child out of seven has lost at least one of its parents.

This, the difficult situation in the country prior to the earthquake, became a shocking humanitarian emergency. Thus GVC, which has been working in Haiti since 2009, immediately got together with other Italian NGO and local organizations with a view to planning interventions for rebuilding in two quarters in the capital (Cité de Soleil and Martissant) and in the Petit-Goâve Region.

Along with Boorea, CCPL supported GVC’s actions in Haiti during 2010 and 2011. This commitment continued in 2012 so as to complete important projects in the fields of education, food safety and the development of production activities, thereby supporting the local families and populations.

“Proyecto Puna Productiva” was created to support the communities linked to the activities of three small cooperatives in the Argentine Andes: one cooperative of opencast salt miners, another for working llama wool and a third for agricultural products.

The initiative involves over 350 families totalling almost 1,800 individuals from several communities located around the salt flats of Salinas Grandes in the province of Jujuy. At an average altitude of some 3,400 meters, the climate makes farming and the sustainable management of natural resources difficult.

The project is promoted and managed by GVC, leading enterprise of an NGO consortium. It is co-financed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and numbers Caritas and the Ministerio del Bienestar Social of the Province as its local partners. The purpose is to strengthen the local productive fabric and improve the difficult living conditions of the local communities.
